Ask anyone: I’m a chatty sort of guy, prone to philosophizing and gesticulation. I love to go deep on one or all of my favorite topics: songwriting, guitars, books, food and drink, psyche, and the meaning of it all. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a handful of fun, meaningful conversations with the hosts of several of my favorite podcasts over the years, collected below. And if you have a podcast of your own, hit me up! Chances are I’d love to speak with you.
That Record Got Me High Podcast - October 7, 2023
Ever since my buddy Todd slipped me a cassette dub of Sparklehorse’s sublime It’s a Wonderful Life back in late 2001, it’s been one of my favorite albums of all-time. It was an honor to speak to Rob Elba from That Record Got Me High about this work of enduring beauty.
HIDDEN GROOVES PODCAST - AUGUST 28, 2023
I’ve been buddies with Rick Hines for nearly two decades, since we both worked part-time at Emerald City Guitars in Seattle - so when he told me he was starting a podcast and invited me to be one of the first guests, I was thrilled. There’s a warm glow to our conversation that I can only attribute to Rick’s sincere enthusiasm and kindness. We cover lots of ground, including literature and film…so if you’ve ever wanted to hear me talk (a little) about my adoration for Herman Hesse and Ingmar Bergman, look no further!
AQUARIUM DRUNKARD “TRANSMISSIONS” PODCAST - AUGUST 9, 2023
This is/was a big one for me. I’ve been a fan and faithful listener to Jason P. Woodbury’s conversations on the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions Podcast for years, and as Jason alludes, he and I eventually struck up an online correspondence that has been illuminating and nourishing. By happenstance, we ended up recording on the day that news broke of Sinéad O’Connor’s tragic passing. Her searching spirit looms over our conversation. I hope you enjoy it.
PERFORMANCE ANXIETY PODCAST - JULY 27, 2023
I’ve enjoyed listening to a number of Marc Shea’s interviews with friends and collaborators of mine, so I jumped at the opportunity to speak with him for the Performance Anxiety podcast. Marc is a kind and curious person, and I really appreciated our chat.
TRADING FOURS PODCAST - March 3, 2023
I really enjoyed my conversation with Jamie Green from the Kansas City-based Trading Fours Podcast. We discuss my upcoming show at miniBar, the value of collaboration, my Mississippi River Valley roots, Herman Hesse, Big Star, and so much more.
MAX INK RADIO - February 25, 2023
It was such a pleasure to speak with Teri Barr from Wisconsin-based Max Ink Radio about my upcoming shows in Madison and Milwaukee. Thank you, Teri!
VOA BORDER CROSSINGS - FEBRUARY 22, 2023
I really enjoyed speaking with Fabiola Garcia from the Voice of America Border Crossings Podcast about Forfeit the Prize and my upcoming Midwest tour dates. If you’re a Spotify user, the link above should take you right to my segment.
COUCH RIFFS - FEBRUARY 13, 2023
Monster guitarist and creative renaissance man Mike Squires has been a friend since my earliest days in Seattle, nearly 20 years ago at this point, and speaking to him for his Couch Riffs podcast reminded me how much I love the man. Generous, curious, and extremely funny. We get into some deep stuff, and I hope you enjoy it. Support him on Patreon, and check out the archives (I recommend the Keith Lowe, Rachel Flotard, and Rusty Willoughby episodes to start).
The fretboard Journal Podcast - January 20, 2023
I’ve been a Fretboard Journal subscriber for many years now, so I was thrilled to speak with my friend Jason Verlinde for episode 395 of The Fretboard Journal Podcast. This interview was recorded in October 2022, right on the heels of the release of Forfeit the Prize, and just before a series of celebratory NW shows. (Jason also captured a video performance of “Safe for Dreaming” while I was at the FJ office.)
ThE CRASH AND RIDE PODCAST - August 18, 2019
I had an extremely in-depth and candid conversation with my friend Patrick Ferguson for The Crash and Ride Podcast in 2019, shortly after landing in South Carolina. We talk about guitars, tacos, and surviving child abuse, among other things. Patrick did important work on this podcast, and I encourage you to raid the archives if you’re interested in music and mental health.
NAKEDLY EXAMINED MUSIC - December 19, 2018
I was honored to be a guest on Mark Linsenmayer’s Nakedly Examined Music back in 2018. We discuss “Desperate Tormentors” and “How to Escape” from Trembling Frames, along with a couple of older Red Jacket Mine tracks.
